Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday of the year. It’s a time for family and friends to come together, break bread, fellowship and to just be grateful for another day. Can I get an Amen, please?
What Thanksgiving is all about: Langston (6 years) & Logan (1 year)
I don’t know about the rest of you, but at the Osorio household the turkey is not star at the dinner table. That’s right, I said it. It’s a mere centerpiece surrounded by the true stars that make that JIVE turkey look good. The sides, baby, it’s all about the sides. That’s where the real money is.
When it comes to sides everyone has their favorite whether it’s a classic or twist on that classic. And there’s usually a debate on what to prepare and who’s going to prepare it. Will it be cranberry sauce from the can or from scratch, pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie (um, sweet potato, thank you very much), and the rivalry between stuffing vs. dressing. Oh, while we’re on the topics of stuffing, did you know there was a White Castle Stuffing? Now I like White Castle like the next person but I just think that’s a little scary. Sorry if I come off as a snob, but I’m just saying. Ok moving on…
Now I didn’t grow up always eating the common dishes known to American culture. Mashed potatoes, NOPE, green bean casserole…what’s that? I come from a proud West Indian and Puerto Rican background. So around the holidays it was about arroz con habichuelas, collard and/or turnip greens, tostones, turkey stuffed with mofongo, and if there were any green beans made you best believe there was a ham hock or neck bone floating around in the pot mixing it up. Flavor baby.

Whether you’re preparing a super blow-out meal, having people bring things over, or even ordering carry out from your favorite restaurant, don’t forget to take time to reflect and remember what it is we should be thankful for.
